The Ann Street Gallery is proud to present Light as Medium with an Artist Reception Saturday, June 22, 2013 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. This event is free and the public is cordially invited to attend.

In Light as Medium, artists using holographic and photographic techniques explore light as medium on their own terms. Works of particular interest in this exhibition are the retrospective showcased holograms and laser works by Rudie Berkhout. Berkhout played a significant role in establishing holography as a serious art form in the 1970’s and later became known as one of its foremost practitioners. Since that time, his work has inspired not only his peers, but a new generation of holographers.

Also on view in the exhibit are recent works by holographer Mary Harman and Susan Cowles-Dumitru. Harman uses the holographic image as a sculptural entity which are presented as elements within artworks that combine different mediums. Cowles-Dumitru concentrates on Reflection holograms using silver halide on glass, sometimes combining ink drawings on paper into her work.

A second component of the Light as Medium exhibition features the works of photographers Eric Anthony Johnson, Amanda Means, Sally Weber and Brian Wood. Johnson is a photographer working in the wet-plate collodion Tintype tradition, using contemporary subjects for his one-of-a-kind portraits. Means work explores the creation of large-format Polaroid prints in her Light Bulb series. Wood works with multiple media in painting, drawing and printmaking incorporated into his photography. While the pieces by Weber focus on three-dimensional, high resolution large-format digital prints and dimensional imagery.

This exhibit coincides with the Newburgh Illuminated Festival (June 21-23), an event designed to celebrate the rich history of the City of Newburgh. The works in this show will be on view Friday, June 21 through Saturday, August 17, 2013. The Artist Reception will be held on Saturday, June 22 from 6:30-8:30 pm

The Ole! exhibition focuses on works by a select group of Mexican American artists who are exploring new dimensions within contemporary art and in recognition of Cinco de Mayo. The goal of the exhibition is to celebrate Mexican American artists, their Mexican heritage and cultural pride in the Unites States. Artists included in this exhibition, while sharing roots in Mexico, live and work across the United States blending together their art and cultural traditions with their identities as Americans.

Mexican American art has developed as a social phenomenon since its inception in the 1960′s to its present contemporary form. Today’s Mexican American art is social, psychological and multifaceted, though American in character and universal in spirit. It has flourished well beyond the boundaries of pure political commentary and is appreciated by diverse audiences for the unique contribution these artists are making to art and America’s cultural development. Many of the pieces in the Ole! exhibition are a contemporary take on Mexico’s varied cultural expressions. On view are works that reference reclaimed traditional crafts and symbols, folk art, popular culture and a plethora of contemporary practices. Other works presented examine a variety of traditions that draw their inspiration from the unique perspective of Mexican visual culture and vocabulary, vehicles which have helped shape each artist’s work. By examining these visual works one can gain insight into the physical and psychological forces at play in the evolution of Mexican American art, the artist’s consciousness and creative expression.

Viewing these works, one will appreciate Mexican American art as another facet of the rich, vibrant threads that are being interwoven into the tapestry of the larger American experience. The tapestry makes up the “Great American Experiment,” while advancing a deeper understanding of Mexican culture, identity and history.

Artists featured in the exhibition include Rolando Briseno, Priscilla Dobler, Susan Elizalde, Tina Fuetnes, Carlos Fresquez, Juan Granados, Benito Huerta, Tlisza Jaurique, Paola Nunez, Linda Vallejo, Marela Zacarias and Marcus Zilliox.

The contemporary art scene welcomes new generations of artists gleaning inspiration from the practice of the non-representational. One can see such inspired works in our newest exhibition Abstractions: New Modernism, which highlights a group of artists who make a deliberate case for abstraction, while breathing new life into the genre. Within this exhibition, the extension of abstraction runs through various and diverse mediums: painting, drawing, sculpture, collage and digital images, while resisting grand generalizations and addressing skeptical attitudes and misunderstandings we often bring to our experience of abstract art.

Western abstract art has been with us for hundreds of years, but many of us still wander around museums and art galleries perplexed as to the meaning of abstract works. New York critic Clement Greenberg acknowledged this situation when he wrote: “The pictures …startle because they seem to rely on ungoverned spontaneity and haphazard effects; or because, at the other extreme, they present surfaces which appear to be largely devoid of pictorial incident.” Then one might ask, “What is abstract art good for?” “What is the value of paintings, sculptures or drawings that do not seem to show anything except pictures of nothing?”

For a clearer understanding of abstract art one can look to its beginnings in the late 19th century, when abstraction was “invented” as a result of then avant-garde movements including Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. These styles of painting reduced the importance of original subject matter and emphasized the creative process of painting. In the first decade of the 20th century, European painters began to abandon the established Western conventions of imitating nature, and searched for new methods of form and expression sparking a movement of abstraction.

What is clear, is that abstract art can be interpreted in various ways and relies on reflection for meaning to emerge. It doesn’t matter greatly whether someone likes or dislikes abstract art. It is a common tendency of people to narrow the field of what they consider permissible in art to their own personal prejudices.

Abstractions: New Modernism offers an opportunity to transcend this way of thinking, to remain open for any individual response, especially those not confined to any single dictate or definition. The work of the artist is to affect the nature of the viewer’s response to their work.

Young Emerging Artist Between ages 18- 25 years

Ann Street Gallery is pleased to announce an open call for emerging young artists ages 18 to 25 who are invited to submit their work for consideration in our December 2012 group exhibition:

Theme: The Ann Street Gallery provides excellent exhibition opportunities, with over 1,500 square feet of exhibition space to focus on revealing new young talent, ideas, and practices in the contemporary art, and a chance for emerging young artists to gain exposure for their work. The Ann Street Gallery will create a salon-style wall installation of 12”x12” individual works of all mediums and styles. Up to 200 artists will be selected. Works for consideration may be of any media and any style, including painting, drawing, mixed media, prints, photography, textile, video, ceramic and sculpture. (Ceramic and sculptures may not exceed 50 lbs.) All works must be original, for sale and available for the duration of the exhibition.

Eligibility:
• Open to all emerging artists 18 years to 25 years.
• All works must conform to a dimension of 12” H x 12” W, inclusive of any framing. Works may be smaller in size, but framing must bring the measurement to 12”x12”.
• Sculpture/Ceramics may be wall mounted either by a hanging device or a shelf measuring 12” wide and video work must be shown on a hanging apparatus that makes the player 12”x12”.

Juror: Virginia Walsh, Ann Street Gallery Director and Curator of Exhibition.

Award: Four finalists will be selected to comprise a four-person exhibition in the Ann Street Gallery slated for 2014.

The Ann Street Gallery’s new exhibition presents the work of renown photographer Dmitri Kasterine with an Artist Reception on Saturday, August 4, from 6-9 pm. Inside the Ann Street Gallery the People and Places 1955-2011 exhibition opens, along with Kasterine’s not to be missed, outdoor mural size photographic installation Newburgh: Portrait of a City series.

Since the early 1960s, Kasterine has photographed some of the most eminent cultural figures of the twentieth century. Featured in the ASG exhibit are studies of Samuel Beckett, Francis Bacon, Stanley Kubrick and David Hockney. Selections of these portraits (also in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery) plus 40 other notables will be on view in the main gallery.

The son of a White Russian army officer and his British wife, Dmitri Kasterine was born in London in 1932. Following early careers as a wine salesman, Lloyd’s broker, racing driver and pilot, Kasterine’s photographic career began in 1961 when his work began appearing in the leading publications of the time, including Queen magazine. He began a long association with film director Stanley Kubrick in 1964, when he began shooting stills on his film Dr Strangelove and later era-defining projects, A Clockwork Orange (1968) and 2001: A Space Odyssey (1971). In the 1970s and 1980s Kasterine was commissioned to take portraits for magazines including the Daily Telegraph Magazine, Harpers & Queen and a variety of his work was published in The Times, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Interview, and The New York Times. In 1986, he left Britain to move to the United States. In addition to his professional career, Kasterine has produced important personal photographic surveys including England and the English (1981). Presently, Kasterine is working on his book Newburgh: Portrait of a City scheduled to be published by Norton in fall with a book signing in the Ann Street Gallery on September 8, 2012.

In conjunction with the ASG People and Places 1955-2011 indoor exhibition, on Saturday, August 4th from 12-6 pm, Safe Harbors of the Hudson will be hosting their annual Ann Street Market. The Ann Street Market brings fresh local food, art and music to the Newburgh community each year. This festival features a flea market, fresh flowers, antiques, arts and crafts, food vendors, fun activities for children and live music throughout the day. You won’t want to miss these events which are free and open to the public!

People and Places 1955-2011 is on view through Saturday, September 30, 2012 (*date  has been extended) and Newburgh: Portrait of a City outdoor mural installation will be up through November 2012. This project is made possible, in part, with funds from Orange County Tourism and the County of Orange.

The Ann Street Gallery is delighted to present its newest exhibition Gendered Object: Barbie as Art

It seems the entire world knows who Barbie is, and in Gendered Object: Barbie as Art, a group of contemporary artists embrace this plastic beauty, whose iconic pop culture image exerts a powerful influence on artistic and visual culture alike. Mass-produced objects like dolls can tell us much about the creation and significance of self-image in the context of group identities. Since the 1960′s and the advent of the “consumer society” playing with gender identity through styling and fashion has moved from the margins to occupy a more mainstream position. This has since been expressed in popular culture through an interest in androgyny, breaking conventional gender dress codes, gender bending and body reconstruction.

The artists in Gendered Object: Barbie as Art, address these issues within the environment of a visually diverse, mixed media exhibition which features the potent pop culture icon: Barbie, a merchandising phenomenon. The exhibition examines artists’ work that reconstructs and re-presents Barbie in a variety of ways that make an impact on our visual culture within the contexts of feminism, gay culture, gender issues, and the use of a commercial symbol and product for purposes of artistic expression. Here, Barbie the contradiction of a gendered object, is showcased in works of art that include paintings, silkscreen, photography, drawings, sculpture and video.

Originally, the Barbie doll was based on a German postwar pin-up named Lilli, created by Greiner & Hauser and designed as a pornographic caricature sold to adult men in tobacco shops. Later, when introduced to the American public, she became destined for young girls, not men. Barbie’s inception into the American market has elicited its fair share of mixed feelings about her image and ability to be a positive role model for young women. With her blonde hair, large breasts, tiny waist, and long legs, Barbie’s proportions have become cliché for an idealized and (anatomically incorrect) physically unattainable female body. She has been seen as the ultimate male fantasy, the embodiment of the American feminine ideal, and as a sex object icon feminists love to hate. Barbie has also provides an unprecedented example for female independence. She has been marketed as career oriented, unmarried, childless, and in a sense, an advocate and role model for the contemporary modern woman; single, financially independent, educated, sophisticated, socially adept and a world traveler.

While many of the works in Gendered Object: Barbie as Art offer more diversity and alternate messages that accurately reflects society and the roles women play, they also explore the powerful hold Barbie has over the artists’ own psyche. This hold is investigated in the framework of the artists’ own personal relationship with the plastic female, using Barbie as an inspiring source of material within the context of fantasy settings and unlimited imagination. Not dissimilar to Barbie’s “Dream World” itself.
